ADVANCED PUMP TECHNOLOGIES

Edition 02 : 01 January, 2002

Description of the Holdfast suction cups

A range of suction cups (grips) or suction lifters with flexible stainless steel inserts, fitted with a vacuum pump and incorporating a safety device, for manual use with weights up to 150kg. The Holdfast suction cups feature metal structures, the superfilter filter groups, and a mini-skirt enabling the lifters to be used on slightly rounded surfaces.

Currently available in three models:
Holdfast 70 with capacity 70kg. Break-off point 90kg.
Holdfast 150 with capacity 150kg. Break-off point 180kg.
Holdfast 150 with vacuum guage with capacity 150kg. Break-off point 180kg.

Applications

Holdfast are typically used in the glass industry for use with sheet glass, in the vehicle maintenance industry for the fitting of windscreens, in the marble industry for lifting and placing polished marble, in industries handling sheet metal and sheet plastics, in the house-removals industry for lifting and transporting items (refigerators, ovens etc) with smooth surfaces.

THE SUPERFILTER GROUP

The main problem encountered with suction lifters of the Holdfast type in the past has always been the possibility of dirt or dust entering the bearing area and causing loss of vacuum.
(a)The operator could not know that the bearing was dirty until the lifter actually failed.
(b)As it was necessary to dismantle the head of the filter to get at the bearing area, no systematic preventive maintenance was carried out.
(c)Because the cleaning operation was relatively complicated, lifters were commonly returned to the supplier for maintenance, with corresponding expense and loss of use of the lifter.

The introduction of the Superfilter group has elminated these characteristic problems at origin.
(a)Systematic and regular preventive checks are possible. How to carry out these checks is set out in the section "Use and maintenance of the Holdfast lifters" below. Checking and/or cleaning requires a maximum of five minutes and can be carried out entirely on site.
(b)A cigarette type filter has been used to avoid all difficulty in supply on site of spare filters
(c)The distributor is free from most of the maintenance he has been called upon to carry out up to now.

THE MNI-SKIRT

The mini-skirt is a wide flexible ring supplied with Holdfast Superfilter lifters as a standard accessory. It is of particular help in the initial positioning of the lifter (immediate pressure adherence is obtained even on vertical surfaces) and in the use of the lifter on slightly curved surfaces (e.g.motor vehicle windows) and some types of uneven glass surfaces. It is fitted into the base of the lifter in place of the thin narrow ring inserted in the rubber base on delivery of the lifter.

THE VACUUM GUAGE

The Holdfast 150 can also be supplied with a vacuum guage, which offers an extra safety measure (visual reading of the vacuum level shown by the guage) in addition to the standard safety device, a red line on the pump piston which when it appears indicates to the user that the lifter is losing vacuum grip and that the object being lifted must be put to rest and the vacuum pump recharged.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND MAINTENANCE

Preliminary notes

1)The surface of the object to be lifted must be clean and dry and the surface of the lifter should be clean.
2)The rings on the Holdfast Superfilter base must be free from cuts, damage, or dirt. The felt ring under the base should be in place.
3)In presence of very low (below zero degrees centigrade) temperatures, the rubber of the base may become more rigid and the capacity of the Holdfast Superfilter unit may be affected.
4)Make sure that the piston (pump), after having been pumped several times so as to remain in its extreme position inside the cylinder, remains there.

Respect for your Holdfast Superfilter unit

Your Holdfast Superfilter unit is a precision instrument.
Treat it with respect and it will give you years of trouble-free service.
DO NOT DROP IT OR THROW IT AROUND.
KEEP IT CLEAN
REPLACE IT IN ITS CARRY BOX AFTER USE.
CHECK CLEANLINESS OF FILTER, BEARING AND BEARING SEAT REGULARLY

How to use your Holdfast Superfilter

1)Push your Holdfast Superfilter against the clean and dry surface to be lifted so that an initial adherence is obtained. The mini-skirt will often be found of particular help in this respect.
2)Pump until the piston remains in its full inside position, to create vacuum.
3)Thumb pressure on the release catch allows air to enter and the Holdfast can then be detached from the surface again.
4)Important! The pump and/or release catch must not be actioned while handling is under way.

Should the pistom come out more or less rapidly this means there is loss of vacuum. Put the object being lifted in a rest position immediately. ATTENTION! THE RED LINE ON THE PISTON, WHEN VISIBLE, MEANS DANGER!!

Loss of vacuum can be caused by:

1) Unreasonably long periods in a holding position without further creation of vacuum. Never leave your Holdfast Superfilter in position overnight.
2) Dirty or rough surfaces. Clean and dry dirty surfaces.
3) The rings on the Holdfast base are cut or damaged. Replace the base.
4) Dirty bearings and/or bearing seat. Lift the metal lever in the upper part of the Holdfast handle and withdraw the small cylinder to which it is attached. Unscrew the two parts of the cylinder. Do this carefully! DO NOT LOSE THE SMALL BEARING! Remove the bearing and clean the bearing and the bearing seat. Replace the bearing in its seat and then screw the two parts of the cylinder back together again. Check the filter, and if necessary, change it. The filter can be substituted by a cigarette filter if an original replacement filter is not available on site. Re-insert the small cylinder in its place in the Holdfast handle, making sure the cylinder is pushed right down into position. Close the lever, ensuring that it fits correctly into its housing in the Holdfast handle. Test pump against a suitable surface and ensure that the piston does not come out after pumping.
5) Dry felt on pump piston. Apply a small quantity of acid-free lubrificant.
6) The rubber piston ring can become temporarily deformed if the Holdfast has been laid up for a long time without use. Usually the ring will reach its normal degree of flexibility after a few minutes' pumping.
7) Rarely, it may be necessary to replace the rubber "O" ring on the piston or in the release catch. In this case the Holdfast should be returned to your supplier for maintenance or a complete piston or release group purchased.
8) Holdfast Superfilter suction cups are designed for use by hand. Use with cranes etc can be dangerous because of incorrect weight distribution and sudden application of excess force.
