Schedule 13 : 25 progressive steps to local development

Dan Chiras and Dave Wann of Evergreen, Colorado (USA) devised a list of 25 steps to help to create sustainable suburbs in developed countries may be applicable to urban development applications under this Model. They are cited from the periodical The Last Straw, Issue 35, Fall 2001, p. 11. They are mentioned as amongst the initiatives which could typically be taken under the local money systems to strengthen community ties. Many of these steps are applicable also to local development in developing countries.

EASY STEPS

01. Sponsor periodic community dinners.
02. Establish a community newsletter, bulletin board and community roster.
03. Establish a "Neighbourhood Watch" programme.
04. Start neighbourhood investment clubs, community sports activities, and restoration projects.
05. Form discussion groups.
06. Establish a neighbourhood baby-sitting cooperative.
07. Form an organic food cooperative buying club.
08. Create car or van pools for commuting.
09. Start a community support network to help neighbours through rough times and celebrate the good times.

BOLDER STEPS

11. Establish a community bank account to finance neighbourhood projects.
12. Begin to tear down fences, opening back yards to create communal play spaces, a space for neighbours to mingle.
13. Plant a community garden and orchard.
14. Establish a community composting and recycling facility.
15. Establish a more edible landscape - incrementally remove grass in front lawns and replace with vegetables and fruit trees.
16. Create a car-share programme - purchasing a van or truck to rent to community members
17. Start a community-supported agriculture (CSA) programmes in which neighbours "subscribe to local farm's produce.
18. Begin community-wide retrofitting of homes for energy and water efficiency.

BOLDEST STEPS 19. Create a community energy system, e.g. solar and/or wind.
20. Establish alternative water and waste systems - e.g., cisterns for catching rainwater and "living machines" or constructed wetlands to treat waste water, etc.
21. As the neighbourhood population ages and children leave home, retrofit garages and homes with apartments to house students or others.
22. Create a common house - purchase a vacant home and convert it to a common house with a teen room, child-care facility, kitchen, guest rooms, weight room, coffee shop, and a community-shared office with fax machiine, copier, printer etc.
23. Establish a full-time day-care centre.
24. Establish a weekly entertainment programme.
25. Narrow or eliminate streets, converting them to park and to edible landscape, walkways, picnic areas, and regional art displays. Establish peripheral parking with hand carts or golf carts to shuttle people back and forther to homes.
