Operating instructions and maintenance of the Moduflow pumps

General warning

These instructions constitute an integral part of the product supplied and must be delivered to the end user who must read them and follow them closely. These instructions must be kept carefully by the end-user for future use. Neither the manufacturer nor his suppliers or agents shall be held liable for any loss or damage whether direct or indirect howsoever caused to persons or things as a result of failure to observe the following instructions.
Any action or operation not expressly stated in these instructions to be correct and/or applicable shall be deemed to be incorrect and/or improper.

Never tamper with electrical parts.

Drawing of the Moduflow pumps

A drawing of the pump is included in the instructions accompanying each pumping unit.
For drawings of pump parts and dimensional drawings please refer to DRAWING of the Moduflow pumps.

Operating instructions

General instructions

The inlet is in front part of the pump body. The outlet is in the rear part of the pump body as is shown in the DRAWING of the Moduflow pumps.
Before starting up the pump make sure that the position of the inlet and delivery pipes is such that eventual leakage of liquid at any open inlet/outlet is such that no harm can be caused to any persons or things.
Where the pump is trolley mounted, the trolley must be on a level position so that it will not move either when stopped or in the presence of the light vibrations which occur during operation.
Where the pump is supplied without electric cable and/or switch and/or plug, the electrical connections must be carried out by professionally qualified electricians.
Moduflow pumps are self-priming liquid ring pumps. When the pump is new, or each time the pump is emptied (e.g. when the pump is subjected to maintenance or when there is a change in the liquid being pumped) the pump cavity must be primed by filling it through either the inlet or the outlet. Once primed, the pump is self-priming to a depth of 5 meters.
Look at the arrow placed on the motor fan cover to make sure the desired inlet and outlet conform with the DIRECTION OF ROTATION of the motor.
WARNING! The pump and the motor can reach temperatures of up to 100 degrees C. during operation.

Use and operation of the by-pass or pressure controller.

The parts references are those included in the DRAWING of the Moduflow pumps.

The by-pass mechanism built into the pump allows the maximum pressure of the pump to be varied, and therefore capacity at the various heads to be reduced or increased. A valve (08) activated by a spring (07) the force of which is controlled by turning the knob (04) and the piston (05) closes a passage which communicates with the compression chamber. So long as there is no pressure, as for instance during liquid transfer, the by-pass cannot work. In the presence of a pressure in the pipes caused for instance by a tap or a filter, or head, the pressure inside the pump will tend to open the by-pass control, allowing recirculation of part of the liquid into the suction chamber of the pump. At that point it is possible to regulate both capacity and pressure. During liquid transfer the device is particularly useful as when it is adjusted to its minimum, the pump outlet can be closed without stopping the pump. Numerous recipients can thus be filled by simply turning a tap or ball valve on or off.

Maintenance

The problems which most frequently arise

**Leakage from the mechanical seals. The mechanical seals are subject to wear and tear and require periodic replacement.
**Pump performance does not appear to correspond to that indicated in the capacity charts. Check that the impeller is in good condition and that the feed pipes at both the inlet and the outlet are those prescribed for the pump.
**The electric motor does not start. In this case, a qualified electrician should be called.

Maintenance operations

Before proceeding to open the pump to clean it and/or to remove and/or replace either the mechanical seal or the impeller:
TURN OFF THE POWER SUPPLY!
MAKE SURE THAT SAFETY CLOTHING (AND ESPECIALLY GLOVES AND PROTECTIVE GLASSES) ARE WORN WHERE AGGRESSIVE LIQUIDS ARE BEING PUMPED.
NEVER RESTART THE PUMP UNTIL THE PUMP IS COMPLETELY REASSEMBLED!
Make sure that neither the pump nor the couplings contain any residues of the liquid being pumped.
Unscrew the lock nuts (20) and remove the flange (01) and take of the front (inlet) part of the pump body (09).
Unscrew the impeller set screw (03).
Using an appropriate extractor remove the impeller (13) or the complete rear body group (17)
Extract the rotating part (14) of the mechanical seal from the shaft of the impeller (13). Lightly lubricate the the shaft before fitting the new rotating part (14).
Extract the fixed part (15) of the mechanical seal from its seat in the rear pump body (17) and replace it.
Refit the rear pump body (17) making sure the outlet rests against the upper left tie-rod.
Lubricate the motor shaft and re-fit the impeller with the seal (14 and 15) already in place. To push the impeller on to the motor shaft into its seat, it is useful to use a length of threaded bar which is screwed into the shaft, and then, after having fitted a washer of a suitable diameter, tighten a nut on the threaded rod until the impeller has reached its seat.
Tighten the impeller set screw (11) firmly.
Refit the inlet side of the body (09) making sure the "O" ring (10) is in its seat and that the inlet rests on the upper right hand tie-rod.
Re-mount the flange (01) using the nuts (20) which must be tightened contemporaneously and carefully so as not to put the two parts of the pump body out of line. (Cf. with the tightening of the nuts on car wheels - all nuts should be fitted but not completely tightened, then each nut is progressively tightened in turn).
BEFORE RE-STARTING the pump, make sure that the impeller turns freely.
